Bismuth Oxychloride: Translucent mineral with fair absorbency & good adhesion. Used to add shine to mineral makeup formulas. This mineral may cause allergic reactions or breakouts, and is thus avoided by au naturale.
Boron Nitride: Mineral with average coverage and high adhesion qualities. Light & silky texture. Oftentimes added to formulas to increase adhesion & slip.
Carmine: A red pigment/dye derived from insects native to South America and Mexico that live as parasites on cactus plants. Used as a colorant in food, cosmetics and textiles. Has been associated with severe allergic reactions. This ingredient is listed in the PETA's Caring Consumer guide as a substance of animal origin. None of Au Naturale's products are formulated using carmine.
Kaolin Clay: Average coverage, high absorbency & adhesion, creamy mineral. Very absorbent & used in small amounts to increase adhesion or oil absorption. Avoid using much of this on dry skin types.
Magnesium Stearate: Average coverage, matte, high adhesion mineral. Used to increase adhesion in some mineral makeup formulas.
Mica: Used as an alternative to talc, mica gives a buildable, yet translucent glow to the skin, giving it a perfect quality for use in makeup. Mica can help hide imperfections and fine lines, provides natural UV protection and adheres to the skin providing a smooth base. It is very safe and neither toxic or reactive.
Micronized Titanium Dioxide: More expensive, more translucent, and more UV protection than regular titanium dioxide.
Parabens: Parabens are used to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold in a cosmetic product, increasing its shelf life. Laboratory studies suggest parabens can disrupt reproductive hormones due to the estrogenic nature of them, meaning they can mimic the hormone estrogen, disrupting normal function of the hormone system. Fairly common parabens in cosmetics are: methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, isopropyl-, and butylparaben.
Rice starch: Translucent with fair cohesion. Considered to be a skin soother & emollient.
Sericite Mica: Translucent mica with fair absorbency & good adhesion. Used to add shine to a mineral makeup formula. Silky to the touch.
Titanium Dioxide: High coverage mineral whitener. Natural UV protection.
Zea Mays: Technical name for corn starch. Very translucent with good absorbency & silky texture. Has poor adhesion alone so should be combined with minerals which increase cohesion, such as kaolin clay.
