The GOOD Chemicals

We are all are seeing “no chemicals” or "chemical free" claimed for “clean” cosmetics but unfortunately…it doesn’t work that way. Even water is a chemical. What it's really about is knowing the difference between benign chemicals and destructive or unsafe chemicals. So how do you spot the difference?

A couple quick definitions:

1. A “natural” chemical” is a substance that comes from a naturally available source like a seed or a nut or even clay that is minimally processed using mechanical methods... think vegetable oil.

2. A synthetic chemical is a substance that is made as result of a chemical reaction. Putting two or more chemicals together that cause a physical reaction and result in a new molecule... think old fashion soap or even beer.

Over the past 30 years a practice called “Green Chemistry” has been recognized that allows us to make safe chemicals from renewable inputs that do not pollute, or damage the people who make these new molecules or the environment downstream.

And, believe it or not, you can make certified organic synthetic chemicals!
One example is Xylityl Cocoate - a certified organic preservative made from organic xylitol and organic coconut oil. This dandy little emulsifier allows our formulators to mix oil and water into a creamy emulsion not only using Green Chemistry but also supporting organic producers while making you more beautiful!

It is really difficult to know if the ingredients are from Green Chemistry by just looking at the ingredient list, but you can always ask the brand if you are curious.

As we like to say, save the planet and look good doing it!
